Supermarket shelves are central to retail psychology and space utilization. Product placement directly influences consumer purchasing behavior and supermarket profitability.

**Shelf Zoning:** Supermarkets typically divide traditional gondola shelving into four vertical tiers:

Top Tier (Reach Zone): Located above eye level. Usually reserved for niche brands, high-end goods, or local specialties.

Upper-Middle Tier (Golden Eye-Level Zone): Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 meters from the floor. This is the area that naturally catches the eye first; supermarkets place high-margin items and popular, well-known brands here.

Lower-Middle Tier (Child Eye-Level Zone): Approximately 0.9 to 1.2 meters from the floor. Primarily features products that appeal to children (such as snacks with cartoon packaging or sweetened cereals).

Bottom Tier (Stoop Zone): Requires consumers to bend down to retrieve items. Typically holds large-format packages, heavy items (like large bags of rice/flour or oil drums), or low-margin private-label/bulk goods.

**Common Shelf Merchandising Strategies:** Endcaps: Standalone displays at the ends of shelf aisles; frequently used for promotions, holiday themes, or new product launches, offering high visibility.

Facing: Staff regularly perform "facing" (pulling products forward), ensuring labels face outward and items are positioned at the front edge to create a neat, well-stocked appearance.

FIFO (First-In, First-Out): Products with earlier production dates (closer to expiration) are placed at the front of the shelf, while fresher stock is placed behind them.

Cross-merchandising: Placing complementary products together (e.g., barbecue sauce next to the fresh meat section) to stimulate cross-purchasing.
